Honey in the Rock

    Greetings, Church Family!

I have been listening to a contemporary Christian song that I enjoy entitled “Honey in the Rock,” by Brooke Ligertwood.

The title “Honey in the Rock” got my attention, and I wondered are honey and rock mentioned in the scriptures? Those words did not come to mind in any Bible studies that I could recall.

Well, the song writer went to Psalms 81:16 which reads: “But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”

These words are from God – a covenant that He would restore His people if they would listen to Him and return to Him. God has said He would provide the finest of wheat for a high-quality tasting bread and honey. Honey was not considered necessary or essential but was a treat when found – a great gift!

I grew up thinking bees needed pollen to produce honey, and they also looked for gardens and woodlands to produce their honey as well. I would not expect to find a beehive and honey in a rocky setting. The verse tells us God provides us everything we need even from sources and situations where we least expect. God is providing His people with what we genuinely need in places we would least expect. Even when all we see are rocks, what could God do with a hillside of rocks?

The song also has a reassuring meaning. Wherever we are, we don’t need to worry because God is always next to us and provides us with what we genuinely need.

Relying on God in moments of difficulties is such a great peace of mind when we recall how faithful God is for us. When we trust Him and allow Him to guide and provide for our needs, we realize the sweetness of His love – a love that can be found in places we would not expect. His love is all around us!

    Praise God!

There’s honey in the rock, Water in the stone, Manna on the ground, No matter where I go.  I don’t need to worry now that I know, Everything I need You’ve got, There’s honey in the rock.
