Unity

08.08.23 | Elder's Corner | by Roger Brokaw

1 Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!  2  It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! 3  It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. Psalm 133

Unity is sometimes illusive. Eph 4:13 encourages us to “maintain the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” Psalm 133 gives a word picture of what unity is like. It is like the precious oil on the head, beard, and clothes of Aaron. While that may not sound very appealing to us in the 21st century, at the time this was written, being anointed with oil was an honor. It generally had a fragrant, pleasing odor. Many times in the Bible, oil is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. In Aaron’s case, he was set apart as a holy priest to God and anointed by the Holy Spirit to intercede for the people and the anointing was not a dribble of oil but a pouring, to the extent that it ran down onto his clothing.. What a blessing for them. The oil pouring over Aaron was an opportunity for them to maintain a relationship with God, to have that unity with Him and each other.

David also compares unity to the refreshing dew that fell on the mountains of Israel, specifically Mount Hermon. Although a lot of Israel was arid, it is reported that the dew on Mount Hermon would get their tents as wet as if it had rain during the night.

Obviously, unity is desirable. Sometimes we get to see that unity at work among us. Vacation Bible School was one of those recent times. It was great to see so many people involved in so many ways, to bring about the successful accomplishment of our goal as a group of believers, to reach, teach, and empower. Thank you to all who participated! I am sure you felt the power of the Holy Spirit and the unity He brings when we when are focused on His work. God bless!
